According to a report from Football Insider – Tottenham Hotspur have decided to keep Djed Spence this summer and the defender will “be part of Ange Postecoglu’s first-team squad this upcoming season”.
Spence has been impressing in pre-season, and Ange Postecoglu recently spoke well of the defender.
After the departure of Emerson Royal to Italian giants AC Milan was, at long long last, officially confirmed, Spence finds himself as one of two senior out-and-out right-backs at the club, along with Pedro Porro.
Archie Gray did play there at times last season due to Leeds’ shortage in that position, but is still naturally a midfielder and may not be thrown in at right-back too many times during his first season in the top flight at just eighteen years of age.
Spence’s speed and natural athleticism make him a good fit for an Ange Postecoglu side and the high-intensity requirements that come with it. He has covered at left-back in pre-season and even played as a right-winger at times back when he played for Championship side Middlesbrough.
He played with Brennan Johnson at Nottingham Forest too, and those sorts of understandings could make it easier for Spence to settle into [more] regular minutes at Spurs this season.
It is unlikely that Ange will want to make Porro start games in Eastern Europe on Thursday nights and that could be the optimal time for Spence to shine and show his worth.
Spence would be one of two, alongside Ben Davies, homegrown defenders for Spurs, and would save them money on having to specifically recruit players that fit the quota.
As Ange said himself, it is a clean slate for Spence at Spurs and fans are excited at what he will be able to offer and contribute this season.
In a long, grueling season, the entire squad will be called upon at some point during the season and here is hoping Spence will be able to take his chance with flying colors when the time comes for him.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has hinted that the club might make additional signings before the transfer window closes.
After a strong start to the window, Spurs have been active, but Postecoglou’s recent comments suggest that further moves could be on the horizon.
Tottenham began the transfer window with significant activity. The club first extended Timo Werner’s stay, adding stability to their attacking options.
They also brought in promising talents Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. However, the biggest splash came with the acquisition of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for a club-record £65 million. Solanke’s arrival promises to bolster Tottenham’s attack significantly.
Following Tottenham’s friendly match against Bayern Munich, Postecoglou was asked about the impact of Solanke’s transfer on the club’s budget.
Responding with a touch of humor, he remarked, “You know our budget do you mate?” He then noted that there is still plenty of time left in the transfer window, suggesting that Tottenham could remain active in the market.
With Emerson Royal’s departure looking increasingly likely and the uncertain future of Giovani Lo Celso, Postecoglou hinted that the club might seek a new right-back and potentially an experienced midfielder.
Emerson’s imminent exit opens up a gap that Tottenham will need to fill, and Lo Celso’s situation adds another layer of uncertainty.
Moreover, while Solanke’s addition strengthens the squad, Postecoglou is keen on further enhancing the team’s depth.
Tottenham have been linked with some big-name wingers, so it looks like they’re thinking about adding more depth on the wings. This probably means they’ll be busy in the final weeks of the transfer window, trying to round out their squad.
Besides new arrivals, there might also be some big-name exits. With the transfer window closing soon, Tottenham could see a few key players leave, which might affect their final moves in the market.
New quotes from Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglu have left fans excited at the prospect of Dom Solanke being thrown straight in for his Spurs debut.
Speaking to football.london, Ange was asked if a new striker needs to hit the ground running and said “to a certain extent.”
He added “I have always felt hat if you get the recruitment right, then whoever it is hits the ground running.” It is worth noting with this quote that reports have said Solanke was Ange’s “top target” so he most certainly would see the striker as getting the recruitment right.
He then referenced how Micky Van De Ven played and started on the opening day against Brentford last season, despite signing just three days prior to the game.
The Spurs manager continued “We are trying to identify players who fit into our style of football. There will be a bit of adjustment but hopefully they will already have those qualities to come into the group and contribute straight away. That is my expectation when we sign someone – they will be ready to contribute from the moment they arrive.”
From these quotes, it gives a good impression that Solanke will go straight into the starting XI against Leicester City. There may have been some questions marks over that, with the friendly against Bayern Munich coming too soon for Solanke to get any minutes with his new team-mates.
Plus of course, his main competitor Richarlison has missed all of pre-season so far, and needs to get up to speed. Solanke came into pre-season at Bournemouth will a clean bill of health, and has played 88 minutes, despite missing the friendly vs Rayo Vallecano. In terms of mental and physical condition to start against Leicester, familarity with his team-mates is the only thing Richarlison currently has going for him against Solanke.
Spurs begin their Premier League campaign at Leicester City on Monday the 19th. Naturally, there will always be some disappointment when you play on Monday night on the opening weekend. You wait three months for the club season to come back, and then you have to wait until Monday night, exactly 72 hours after the opening game, to play your first game of the season.
However, it could benefit Spurs in this case. Solanke will have more training sessions with his new team-mates, players like Udogie and Richarlison who have been injured for a while have more time to get fit for the game. Players like Cristian Romero who had extended international tournaments have that extra time to get back to 100%.
Should the signing of Solanke be wrapped up this weekend, the 26-year old will have had a full week of being able to train with his new club and get used to the demands of “AngeBall”.
