Telegraph journo: Tottenham’s £40K-a-week “Bernardo Silva” has played his last match for the club

Tottenham Hotspur have done some business in the transfer window in terms of player arrivals and departures. They have brought in young talents such as Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall whilst extending Timo Werner’s loan deal from RB Leipzig.

In terms of outgoings, Ivan Perisic, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon have been released by the club at the end of the 2023/24 season. Bryan Gil is also among a few names to leave the north London club, but on loan.

Tottenham signed Bryan Gil in a £21.6 million transfer, with Erik Lamela moving to Sevilla as part of the deal in 2021. However, the move hasn’t worked out as per expectations, with the Spanish winger struggling to adapt to the fast-paced and physical demands of Premier League football.

The 23-year-old’s struggles in a Spurs shirt have led to a couple of loan moves away from the club. He has spent time on loan at Valencia and Sevilla in Spain after failing to nail down a spot in the Tottenham first team.

However, Ange Postecoglou decided to keep Gil at the club this past season to evaluate his performance. Many felt a change in the managerial hot seat would help him revive his stuttering career in north London, but that didn’t happen. And after managing only 12 appearances across all competitions in the 2023/24 campaign—mostly from the bench—the four-cap Spain international has been farmed out on loan to La Liga side Girona last month.

According to The Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath, Gil’s time could already be up at Spurs after leaving for Girona on a season-long loan. If the north Londoners get a good price in a year’s time, the 23-year-old—earning £40,000 per week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, would be sold.

Speaking on The Last Word On Spurs, McGrath said: “He’s surplus to requirements and so far, he’s been allowed out on loan. And I think if they got a good price for him, you know, that in a year’s time, it could be one they look at. So, he’s always struck me that he’s really suited to Spanish football, rather than the Premier League.”

Over a period of time, it has become clear that Gil isn’t suited to playing in the Premier League due to his lack of physicality and lean build. The fleet-footed winger has plenty of talent, and with the right players and system in a more technical league such as La Liga, he will likely thrive and develop. Given his technical attributes and vision, it isn’t surprising that the player was compared to Manchester City star Bernardo Silva by former Spurs boss Antonio Conte in 2023.

Girona, who enjoyed an excellent 2023/24 season and qualified for the Champions League under boss Michel, believe that the 23-year-old has the skill set and potential to succeed in La Liga, and thus, they have taken a punt on him.
