Midfielder says new club “smells of football” after Tottenham exit – Ready to wear important shirt

Throughout his career, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been able to talk a good game. The midfielder is almost always excellent with his communication and that set him apart when he was breaking through as a youngster.

For many months before his Tottenham Hotspur exit it was apparent the Denmark international was eyeing up a new adventure. Agents were said to be working throughout European football, compiling offers for the Spurs man to pick his favourite from.

Good performances for Denmark at Euro 2024 won’t have done the player any harm at all, but perhaps his choice for a club may have surprised some, with Hojbjerg plumping for Marseille.

Ligue 1 may not be one of Europe’s biggest, especially after losing multiple stars in recent years, however, it was the whole package that did it for the 29-year-old. And, let’s face it, the south of France isn’t exactly a bad place to live.

AFP quote him as saying that Marseille “smells of football”, before he added: “I already knew the club, I already knew Ligue 1, a very beautiful story. It’s an important jersey and club in France. The most important jersey in France. It’s with this state of mind that I come here.”

Marseille didn’t release the conditions of their deal with Tottenham, and now AFP reported it as a loan, presumably a paid one, with a mandatory €13m purchase clause.

Essentially a deferred permanent transfer.
